The 1990's Trance Europe Express compilation series from Volume featured 119 European electronic artists, no artist ever appearing twice. It was inspired by the futurism of the Kraftwerk song rather than the trance genre. The fifth and final installment, compiled by Sarah Champion pushed the musical and geographical boundaries to their limits coming out at the start of 1997, when makers of the continent's dance/electronic music were rocketing off in all kinds of new directions.

Trance Europe Express 5 is a genre-busting compilation where anything goes. This was a collection of low ridin' future skank, dubbed-out rumba, Detroit-flecked funk, twisted hip-hop, abstract jungle, nocturnal electronica, jazz-soaked techno-soul and future-house.
It represents the electronic scene's move from icy minimalism to old-skool funkiness. Early '80s electro is celebrated by Glamorous Hooligan, Andrea Parker, Stasis and The Advent. Ian Pooley, Marshall Jefferson, Killer Loop and Slam represent the resurgence in techno-house. As One, Orlando Voorn, Outcast, Christian Vogel, Russ Gabriel and Carl Cox all remind us that techno can be funky. DJ Trace's epic 'The Beacon' is at the sharp end of drum 'n' bass.
Trance Europe Express 5 lets you into the secret world of techno and its makers. They dress in drag, stand on their heads and give you instructions on how to build rockets in your garden shed.
Just as musically it is more disparate than the previous four compilations, it is geographically it too. As well as featuring artists from England, Scotland, Germany and Holland, Trance Europe Express 5 focuses on the emerging techno scenes of in Denmark, Austria and the former Yugoslavia: Random Logic from Slovenia, Patrick Pulsinger and Tunakan (B.low) of Vienna's Cheap Records and Future 3 from Copenhagen.
Trance Europe Express 5 features an exciting mix of cutting edge styles that crisscross from techno to drum 'n' bass . It comes with a brilliant full colour, 192-page book with features on all the artists and dozens of superb photographs by some of the top writers and snappers on today's dance scene.
